An Anambra State court has remanded a couple, Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40, and his wife, Chisom Chukwuyere, 30, in a correctional facility over their alleged involvement in the abuse of a 10-year-old boy under their care.

The victim, identified as Chiziterem, is currently receiving medical treatment under the protection of the Anambra State Government following his rescue.

The case drew widespread outrage after a video showing the boy with severe burns and multiple injuries across his body surfaced on social media. The footage, reportedly recorded in Awada, Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, sparked public concern and prompted swift intervention by relevant authorities.

Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspects were arraigned after the conclusion of preliminary investigations.

According to him, the court ordered the remand of the couple pending further proceedings.

“The Anambra State Police Command has secured the remand of Mr Chukwudi Chukwuyere, aged 40, and Mrs Chisom Chukwuyere, aged 30, in a correctional centre over their alleged involvement in the abuse of a 10-year-old boy in Isiowulu, Anambra State,” Ikenga stated.

He explained that the case attracted significant public attention after reports and video footage of the victim emerged online, leading to intensified efforts by security agencies and other stakeholders.

The police spokesman commended residents of the area for their vigilance and cooperation, noting that timely information provided by members of the public contributed to the child’s rescue, medical treatment, and the arrest of the suspects.

Ikenga reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting human rights and ensuring justice for victims of abuse.

“The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to promoting justice and the protection of human rights in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police. Further developments will be communicated accordingly,” he added.

Meanwhile, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has expressed satisfaction with the boy’s recovery.

During a follow-up visit to the hospital, Soludo received assurances from medical personnel that the child’s condition was stable and improving steadily.

She described the progress recorded in the victim’s recovery as a testament to the dedication of the medical team as well as the support, prayers, and goodwill shown by concerned Nigerians.

The First Lady also commended healthcare workers attending to the boy and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring his full recovery and wellbeing.
