The caucus of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the House of Representatives has called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sack the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, over allegations of bias ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The lawmakers also demanded his prosecution, citing concerns about his neutrality and credibility.

The caucus made its position known after a meeting in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the group, caucus leader Afam Ogene said recent developments have raised serious doubts about INEC’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

He warned that the integrity of the 2027 polls could be at risk if the concerns are not addressed.

According to the caucus, Amupitan allegedly made partisan statements on social media supporting the ruling party.

They also claimed he shared content suggesting religious persecution in Nigeria. These actions, they argued, undermine his role as an impartial electoral umpire.

As a result, the lawmakers said his continued stay in office could erode public trust in the electoral process.

However, INEC has rejected the allegations.

The commission stated that Amupitan does not own the social media account in question. Despite this, the ADC caucus insists that digital evidence links the account to him.

This disagreement has further intensified the controversy.

Meanwhile, the issue comes amid a growing leadership crisis within the ADC.

The dispute centres on the recognition of David Mark as the party’s leader.

Although INEC initially recognised him, the commission later withdrew that recognition and reportedly validated a rival faction led by Nafiu Bala.

The decision triggered internal divisions and legal battles within the party.

In addition, the caucus accused some members of the judiciary of interfering in political matters.

They claimed that certain judicial actors may be working with INEC to influence outcomes in ongoing cases related to the party’s leadership dispute.

The lawmakers warned that such actions could undermine democratic principles.

Furthermore, the caucus said it plans to petition the National Judicial Council to investigate judges accused of partisanship.

They referenced concerns raised by Afam Osigwe, who recently warned about declining public trust in the judiciary.

The lawmakers stressed that restoring confidence in democratic institutions must remain a national priority.

The development highlights rising political tension ahead of the 2027 elections.

As calls for accountability grow, the response from the presidency and relevant institutions will likely shape public perception of Nigeria’s electoral system.
