Senator Bala Na’Allah has cautioned that the recent wave of politicians defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should not be seen as a sure path to victory in the 2027 general elections. According to him, the party’s performance and ability to earn the trust of Nigerians will ultimately determine its electoral fortunes, not just the number of high profile figures that join its ranks.
Na’Allah, a founding member of the APC, made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he was asked to comment on the growing number of defections from opposition parties into the APC in various states. While he noted that many of these defectors are influential and have strong followings, he stressed that this does not automatically translate into popular support at the polls.
“It is not in all cases that defections determine the success of a political party,” Na’Allah said. He explained that although defections can attract attention and suggest increased strength, the APC still must work hard to convince Nigerians that it is effectively positioning the country for a better future.
The senator emphasised that public confidence will depend on tangible performance and good governance rather than merely attracting politicians from other parties. He reiterated that the party must demonstrate to citizens that it is genuinely committed to improving the nation’s prospects.
Reflecting on the APC’s founding, Na’Allah said the party was created to correct what its founders saw as a flawed political trajectory under the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but added that the core challenge now is to prove the party’s credentials through action.
His comments come amid a significant trend of defections by governors, lawmakers and other senior figures into the APC, a development that has reshaped Nigeria’s political landscape and fuelled debate about its impact on the 2027 elections.
