A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two close aides of heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.
Kayode, a 46-year-old driver, was arraigned on January 2 before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous and negligent driving.
The charges include dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, reckless and negligent driving under Section 6(1), driving without due care and attention causing bodily harm and property damage under Section 7(1), and driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the same Act.
When the case came up for hearing on January 20, the prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, applied for an adjournment to enable the duplication and forwarding of the case file to the Ogun State Attorney-General’s office, through the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), for legal advice.
The application was initially opposed by defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, who expressed readiness to proceed with the trial. However, in her ruling, the magistrate granted the prosecution’s request in the interest of justice and adjourned the matter to February 25 for further hearing.
The court also granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties.
The case stems from a tragic accident on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when a Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck. Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries, but his personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Joshua was later discharged from hospital after being declared clinically fit. He subsequently visited a Lagos funeral home with his mother to pay final respects before travelling to the United Kingdom for the burial rites.
The remains of Ayodele and Ghami were repatriated to the UK, where a funeral prayer service was held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque. Both men were regarded as key figures in Joshua’s boxing camp, and their deaths triggered widespread tributes across the international boxing community.
