As preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party (LP) has zoned its presidential ticket to the southern region of Nigeria.

The party’s National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Nenadi Usman, announced the decision during a meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

According to her, the party has taken a firm position on the issue.

“We have one certain decision that we have taken, and that is that we will certainly not field any aspirant from Northern Nigeria. We have zoned the position to southern Nigeria,” she said.

No Northern Aspirants Allowed

Furthermore, Usman made it clear that the party will not accept presidential aspirants from the North.

“So if any northerner comes now to want to contest elections, we certainly will not accept that,” she added.

However, she declined to mention any preferred candidate. Instead, she stressed that the party will follow democratic principles during its primaries.

According to her, party members will decide the candidate through voting.

“Whoever the people like and vote for during the primaries could be the candidate,” she said.

Meanwhile, Usman hinted that the party may adjust the timeline for its upcoming congresses.

She explained that rising membership could affect participation if the current schedule remains unchanged.

“If we go ahead to stick to that date, to my mind, we are going to disenfranchise quite a number of people,” she noted.

In addition, Usman expressed confidence in the party’s future. She referenced a recent court ruling in the party’s favor, stating that the case lacked merit and reaffirmed the party’s position.

As a result, the Labour Party’s zoning decision could shape political alignments ahead of the election.
