Islamic scholar Dr Jabir Sani Mai-Hula says Muslims should give Zakatul Fitr at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid al-Fitr prayer.
He explains that the best time to give it is on the morning of Eid, before heading out for prayers.
Dr Jabir adds that scholars also allow Muslims to give the charity one or two days before Eid so it can reach the needy in time for the celebration.

He warns that anyone who gives it after the Eid prayer will no longer count it as Zakatul Fitr, but as ordinary charity (sadaqah).
He further explains that every Muslim who has more food than they need for the day and night of Eid must pay Zakatul Fitr for themselves and those under their care.
According to him, the amount is one sa’i of staple food such as rice, maize, millet, or sorghum. This equals about 2.5 to 3 kilograms per person. Muslims may also give their monetary value where allowed.
