House of Representatives Criminalises Dual Party Membership

The House of Representatives Nigeria has amended the Electoral Act 2026 to criminalise dual membership of political parties.

Lawmakers approved a sanction that includes a fine of ₦10 million or a prison term of up to two years for anyone convicted.

According to lawmakers, the new provision seeks to curb political practices that undermine the credibility of the electoral system.

Dual party membership has long been a contentious issue in Nigerian politics, particularly during election periods and party defections.

The amendment is expected to reinforce party discipline and ensure that political actors formally align with only one party at a time.

The revised provisions will take effect after completing the full legislative process, including concurrence by the Nigerian Senate and presidential assent.
