NiMet DG Advocates Big Data for Climate Resilience

The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency has called for innovative climate solutions.

Charles Anosike made the call at the 2026 conference of the Nigerian Meteorological Society.

The event was held at the University of Lagos in Akoka.

Anosike said climate change is already affecting lives, economies and ecosystems across Nigeria.

He highlighted rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, flooding and desertification as key challenges.

The NiMet DG said traditional meteorological methods are no longer sufficient.

He emphasised the role of artificial intelligence, satellites and big data in modern forecasting.

According to him, AI-driven systems improve accuracy and timeliness of weather predictions.

He said NiMet is already integrating advanced technologies into its operations.

The agency is working with partners including AIM for Scale, Ignitia and Tomorrow.io.

Others include the Korean Meteorological Authority and China Meteorological Administration.

Anosike also highlighted the Digital Climate Advisory Service supporting farmers.

He called for collaboration among researchers, private sector and civil society.

The DG urged stakeholders to strengthen climate services and early warning systems.

He reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to building a climate-resilient Nigeria.
