Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, on Thursday launched a large-scale humanitarian intervention for over 4,000 returnee households in Malam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, recently resettled after years of displacement caused by insurgency.

The beneficiaries, who spent more than a decade in Niger Republic as refugees, received cash assistance, food items, and clothing materials.

According to the state government, each male head of household received ₦20,000, 25kg bags of rice and maize, and clothing, while female heads received ₦20,000 and wrappers.

Governor Zulum said the distribution was necessary due to the town’s difficult terrain, economic strain, and limited access to basic services, stressing that the intervention was aimed at easing hardship and restoring dignity.

“This is not just about money or food; it is about restoring hope and reassuring our people that even in their darkest moments, they are not forgotten,” he stated.

During the visit, Zulum inspected irrigation farms cultivated by returnees, describing the agricultural activities as a symbol of resilience. He pledged additional farming inputs and support to improve food security and livelihood recovery.

The governor also extended assistance to more than 6,000 vulnerable residents in Bosso, Niger Republic, acknowledging the host communities that sheltered Nigerian refugees for nearly nine years.

As part of efforts to stabilise the area, operational vehicles and logistics were donated to the 68 Battalion of the Nigerian Army to enhance troop mobility, rapid response, and patrol operations across vulnerable routes.

Social activities in Malam-Fatori are gradually resuming, with markets open and small businesses operating, though recovery remains ongoing.
