A political commentator, Professor Okey Ikechukwu, has criticised Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over his recent comments about Rivers State politics, arguing that Wike does not “own” the state’s political landscape and should not be issuing warnings to others.
Ikechukwu, a professor of Strategic Management and Human Capital Development, said Wike’s public warnings to political actors are inappropriate and undermine the democratic process. He insisted that no single individual has a monopoly over politics in Rivers State, and that leadership and influence should not be personalised.
His remarks come amid heightened tensions in the state’s political scene, where Wike’s influence has sparked debate within and outside the ruling party. Critics say Wike’s interventions risk deepening divisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ikechukwu called for a more inclusive approach to political engagement in Rivers State, urging leaders at all levels to prioritise democratic norms over personal dominance.
