President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has admitted that many Nigerians initially struggled to understand the direction of his administration. However, he said the country is gradually overcoming the challenges that followed the removal of fuel subsidy.

He spoke during an interfaith breaking of fast with members of the House of Representatives of Nigeria. According to him, the tension that trailed the policy has reduced.

“It was initially very difficult for many to understand the direction of my thinking, but I am glad we are out of the dark tunnel,” Tinubu said. He added that some people believed the government would reverse the subsidy removal, but that did not happen.

President Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy shortly after his inauguration in May 2023. As a result, fuel prices rose sharply across the country.

Consequently, the cost of living increased and many Nigerians expressed concern. There were protests and strong reactions nationwide.

Despite the backlash, the Federal Government defended the decision. It said the move would stabilise the economy, reduce pressure on public finances, and free up funds for key sectors.

At the Ramadan gathering, the President stressed the need for unity and understanding. He said reforms often bring short-term hardship. However, he added that such steps aim to secure long-term stability and growth.

Furthermore, he urged Nigerians to embrace shared sacrifice in the interest of national development.

The interfaith Iftar brought together lawmakers from different political parties. According to the President, this show of cooperation reflects a healthy working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government.

Observers say his remarks signal growing confidence in his economic reforms, even as debates continue over their impact on ordinary Nigerians.
