The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), formally assumed office on Thursday, pledging to uphold integrity, transparency, and unity within the Commission.

Speaking at a brief handover ceremony held at INEC Headquarters in Abuja, Professor Amupitan urged staff to “break down silos” and strengthen collaboration across all departments to enhance operational efficiency and public confidence in the nation’s electoral process.

The event marked the formal transition of leadership from the Acting Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who presented the handover notes to the new chairman. She described the moment as “a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” noting that Amupitan’s assumption of office came at a critical time ahead of the November 8, 2025 Anambra governorship election.

“You are assuming office at a most crucial time,” Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu said, assuring the new chairman of the dedication and competence of INEC’s management and staff.

In his remarks, Professor Amupitan thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him and vowed to lead with fairness and accountability. He emphasized that the forthcoming Anambra election would serve as “a pivotal opportunity to reaffirm INEC’s commitment to free, fair, and credible elections.”

“The eyes of the nation are upon us, and it is our duty to rise to that occasion,” he said, stressing the importance of rebuilding public trust and tackling voter apathy.

Professor Amupitan also assured staff that welfare would remain a top priority under his leadership, saying: “We will expect so much from you, and in return, we must also meet your expectations with fairness and honesty.”

The ceremony was attended by INEC directors, representatives of the University of Jos—Amupitan’s alma mater—as well as members of his family.

Professor Amupitan succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman from 2015 to 2025.
