Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has said the state’s N50,000 monthly Empowerment and Poverty Relief Programme is stimulating economic activities and improving livelihoods across communities.
The governor spoke on Wednesday while presiding over the disbursement of start-up capital to beneficiaries at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.
According to a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf explained that the initiative was deliberately structured to enable beneficiaries to participate meaningfully in the local economy while addressing poverty at the grassroots.
He said the programme fulfils key campaign promises of his administration and aligns with the government’s decision to designate 2026 as a year of intensive empowerment for men, women, and youths in the state.

Governor Yusuf noted that the scheme has been consistently implemented since he assumed office, with thousands of women already benefiting and recording measurable improvements in their standard of living.
Highlighting its impact, the governor revealed that one beneficiary reportedly invested her initial N50,000 grant into a small business and grew the venture to over N1.2 million within two years.
He urged newly selected beneficiaries to deploy the funds judiciously to support their families and contribute positively to their communities.
The governor also commended the Kano State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, as well as the chairmen of the state’s 44 local government councils, for their support and timely release of funds for the programme.
In his remarks, Speaker Falgore said the scale of infrastructural development and poverty alleviation initiatives under the Yusuf administration was visible across the state, adding that even critics have acknowledged the administration’s positive impact.
Earlier, speaking on behalf of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Vice Chairperson and Chairman of Danbatta Local Government Council, Alhaji Jamilu Abubakar Dambatta, who represented ALGON Chairperson Hajiya Sa’adatu Yushau Soja, praised Governor Yusuf’s inclusive leadership and citizen-focused empowerment programmes.
