Abubakar Malami, Former Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has confirmed that he received an official invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and assured the public that he will honour the summons.

The confirmation came during a press briefing on Wednesday, where Malami emphasized his commitment to cooperating with the anti-corruption agency as part of ongoing investigations into matters affecting public interest.

Malami stated, “I have received the invitation from the EFCC and I will ensure that I respond in full compliance with the law. I am committed to transparency and accountability, and I believe in cooperating with regulatory agencies.”

This development follows growing public scrutiny over certain high-profile cases under the EFCC, with citizens and civil society organizations urging full compliance with legal procedures. Legal experts note that the former Attorney General’s willingness to appear before the agency underscores Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional checks and balances.

The EFCC, tasked with investigating financial crimes, including corruption, money laundering, and misappropriation of public funds, has intensified its activities in recent months. Analysts say Malami’s readiness to honour the summons could enhance public confidence in the agency’s independence and the country’s anti-corruption framework.

While Malami did not comment on the specifics of the investigation, he reiterated his support for rule of law and due process, encouraging all public officials to cooperate fully with investigative agencies.

Civil society organizations have welcomed Malami’s statement, calling it a positive step toward accountability. Political commentators suggest that the move may also ease political tensions by demonstrating that even high-ranking officials are subject to institutional oversight.

As the EFCC continues its investigations, Nigerians are watching closely, hoping for transparency, accountability, and justice in line with the nation’s anti-corruption laws.
