Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Wednesday signed the 2026 Appropriation Bill valued at N1.47 trillion into law, making it the first budget in Northern Nigeria to surpass the N1 trillion benchmark.

The signing took place during a meeting of the Kano State Executive Council at the Government House, Kano.

The announcement was confirmed in a statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano.

Speaking before the document was assented to, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ismail Falgore, described the 2026 budget as historic, saying it would give the executive arm the legal backing to continue ongoing projects and initiate new ones focused on improving public welfare.

He added that the Assembly would maintain strict oversight to ensure transparent implementation and effective use of state funds.

The budget, officially approved at N1,477,829,666,131, scaled through third reading at the House last week after clause-by-clause scrutiny at the Committee of the Whole. The passage was announced by the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Bashir Diso.

Governor Yusuf had initially presented a proposal of N1,368,127,929,271, themed “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development.” He stated that the final figure would prioritize infrastructure, education, healthcare, and social welfare in line with his administration’s development goals.

Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to prudent resource management, saying the government would ensure that spending directly benefits citizens across the state.
