Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and the need to protect the broader interests of the people of Kano State.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf communicated his resignation in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, NNPP, in Gwale Local Government Area, with effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.

In the letter, the governor expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity and support given to him since joining NNPP in 2022.

He, however, attributed his decision to persistent leadership disputes and legal challenges currently affecting the party at both state and national levels.

Governor Yusuf noted that the internal disagreements have created deep divisions and weakened cohesion within the party structure, generating uncertainty among members and stakeholders.

He explained that after careful reflection, his resignation was guided strictly by public interest considerations and the need to safeguard peace, unity, and development in Kano State.

The governor emphasized that the decision was taken in good faith and without bitterness.

The statement further revealed that Governor Yusuf’s resignation was accompanied by the exit of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government Chairmen across the state.

Meanwhile, the resignation letter was acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who commended the governor’s performance, particularly in infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare delivery, education, and economic empowerment.

Zubairu also admitted that the party has been grappling with lingering internal crises and accepted the governor’s decision to resign.
