The Director-General of Gombe Geographic Information Systems, Dr. Kabiru Usman Hassan, has chaired a site board meeting to discuss the proposed relocation of Lawanti Market, Kundulum Market, and the Scrap-Metal (Bola-Jari) Market in the Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.
The meeting was held at the agency’s headquarters as part of efforts to improve safety and urban planning.
The relocation directive was issued by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya following a tragic LPG tanker explosion earlier this year, which claimed lives due to heavy congestion around the market areas.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the Akko Local Government Chairman, traditional leaders, land officials, and security representatives, to begin the relocation process.
Speaking at the meeting, the GOGIS Director-General described the move as a proactive step to protect lives, reduce risks, and ensure proper land use.
He called on community leaders and residents to cooperate with the government, noting that the relocation would promote safer and more organized development in the area. Stakeholders also expressed support for the initiative, describing it as timely and necessary for public safety and sustainable growth.
