The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports alleging that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an attempted military coup.

In a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the DHQ described the report by an online publication as false, malicious, and aimed at causing tension and distrust among Nigerians.

General Gusau clarified that the Independence Day parade was cancelled to enable President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral meeting abroad and to allow the Armed Forces to sustain ongoing military operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

He further explained that the arrest of sixteen officers currently under investigation was part of routine internal disciplinary measures to uphold professionalism within the military.

The DHQ assured Nigerians that democracy remains intact and reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ loyalty to the Constitution and the Federal Government under President Tinubu’s leadership.
