The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed accusations by some political actors alleging bias in its operations, insisting that its mandate is to fight corruption, not target opposition politicians.

In a statement issued by the Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, the EFCC said a review of arrests and prosecutions carried out over the past two years shows that individuals from across the political spectrum have been investigated.

The Commission said those facing investigation include prominent members of the ruling party, such as former governors and ministers, as well as politicians from opposition parties and other individuals not holding public office.

According to the EFCC, attempts to portray its work as politically motivated are aimed at intimidating or blackmailing the agency into abandoning investigations involving opposition figures.

The anti-graft agency warned that such pressure, rather than its enforcement activities, poses a greater threat to democracy and accountability.

The Commission stressed that it would not succumb to blackmail or halt investigations to create a false impression of balance or non-selectivity, adding that all cases are pursued strictly on the basis of evidence.

The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to investigating and prosecuting corruption cases without regard to political affiliation.
