TurnUp Jigawa, a youth-led organization, has launched the Local Government Accountability and Performance (LGAP) project to promote transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery across all 27 local government areas of Jigawa State.

The initiative, supported by the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF), aims to tackle limited citizen engagement and weak accountability in local governance—challenges that have contributed to poor public service delivery at the grassroots level.

Speaking at the launch in Dutse, Ahmad Abubakar Gumel, Lead of TurnUp Jigawa, said the project seeks to equip young people with tools and skills to monitor, evaluate, and engage with their local government structures.

Over the one-year period, the LGAP project will feature activities including:

  • Accountability Training Workshops for youth leaders on budget tracking and advocacy;
  • Citizens’ Dialogue Forums in select LGAs to bridge communication gaps between citizens and local officials; and
  • AccountableJigawa Campaign, a digital and radio advocacy drive using hashtags #AccountableJigawa and #TheJigawaWeWant to promote civic participation.

Gumel emphasized that the initiative would also target women, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups through inclusive strategies that strengthen community ownership and foster civic consciousness.

He described the project as “a strategic step toward building a new generation of active, informed citizens who will hold their closest tier of government accountable for development and service delivery.”
