Residents of Asokoro in Abuja have raised alarm after suspected criminals broke into vehicles overnight and stole critical components known as “brain boxes.”
The incident, which occurred in the heart of the high-profile district, has heightened fears among residents and raised fresh concerns about the safety of parked vehicles.
Notably, a 2006 Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Corolla S 2006 were among the vehicles reportedly vandalised.
The attackers removed their engine control units (ECUs) commonly referred to as brain boxes, rendering both cars completely inoperable.
Master Tapping Glass Also Removed
In addition, the suspects removed the master tapping glass from the affected vehicles, further increasing the extent of the damage.
This suggests a deliberate and targeted operation, as both the brain box and the tapping glass are essential components tied to vehicle functionality and access.
Loss Estimated at ₦300,000
According to affected residents, the combined cost of replacing the stolen brain box and the master tapping glass is estimated at about ₦300,000.
As a result, victims now face not only mobility challenges but also significant financial strain in repairing their vehicles.
Theft Carried Out Overnight
Residents said the break-ins occurred overnight, indicating that the perpetrators likely took advantage of reduced movement and limited surveillance.
Consequently, many car owners in the area now fear that similar incidents could happen again if security measures are not improved.
Why Brain Boxes Are Targeted
Brain boxes play a central role in vehicle operation, controlling engine performance and electronic systems.
Therefore, once removed, the vehicle cannot function, making these components highly valuable targets for criminals.
Growing Security Concerns in Asokoro
Although Asokoro is known as one of Abuja’s most secure districts, the incident has shaken residents’ confidence.
In addition, many are questioning how such a coordinated theft could occur without immediate response.
Linked to Increased Activity in Abuja
Meanwhile, some residents believe the incident may be linked to increased human traffic in Abuja during the convention of the All Progressives Congress.
They argue that the influx of people may have created opportunities for criminal activity.
Residents Call for Urgent Action
In response, residents have called on security agencies to intensify patrols and surveillance across the district.
They also urged authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and take proactive steps to prevent further occurrences.
Overall, the incident highlights a troubling trend of criminals targeting vehicle components in high-profile areas.
Going forward, residents expect stronger security presence and decisive action to protect lives and property in Asokoro.
