Donald Trump has approved a disaster declaration for Washington, D.C. following a major sewage spill into the Potomac River.

The declaration allows Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide federal assistance after a sewer line collapsed in January.

Officials said the collapse released millions of gallons of untreated waste into the river, which flows past the nation’s capital.

Authorities will use federal support to help with cleanup efforts, protect public health, and assess damage to water and sewer infrastructure.

Local officials say crews are working to contain pollution and prevent further discharge into the river.
