Nigerian military forces under Operation HADIN KAI have killed at least 16 terrorists linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) during a focused counter-offensive in Borno State.
The neutralisation of the insurgents followed a failed midnight attack on a Forward Operating Base in Auno on 5 February 2026, which troops repelled with superior firepower. The subsequent offensive was launched on 9 February along the Komala axis in Konduga Local Government Area, where soldiers pursued fleeing terrorists up to Gidan Kaji and engaged them decisively.
During the operations, troops recovered weapons, over 20 bicycles used for insurgent mobility, and a cache of supplies believed critical to terrorist activities. The military also arrested suspected ISWAP logistics supporters who were transporting a large quantity of drugs believed to be meant for terrorist use.
In addition to degrading the terrorists’ capabilities, the military successfully rescued 11 kidnapped victims. Two hostages were freed along the Buratai, Kamuya road and reunited with their families, while nine more were rescued after a distress call along the Chibok, Damboa axis. These rescuies underscore the continued threat of abduction by insurgents in the region, part of a broader pattern of kidnappings that have plagued northern Nigeria for years.
This military action comes amid ongoing insecurity challenges across northern Nigeria, including recent terrorist raids that killed civilians and military personnel, highlighting the persistent threat groups like ISWAP and Boko Haram pose to communities.
