The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle “Sommie” Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with Arise News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja. She was 29.

Arise News confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, describing her passing as “a devastating loss to the Arise family and the nation at large.”

“Somtochukwu was not only a respected news anchor, reporter, and producer but also a cherished member of the Arise News family,” the organization said. “Her voice engaged and connected with our viewers, and her professionalism, warmth, and dedication were evident in all she did.”

According to Arise, the attack occurred in the early hours of September 29 when armed robbers broke into her Katampe home. Details remain sketchy, but the Nigeria Police Force has launched a full investigation into the crime.

The FCT Police Command confirmed that detectives are examining the crime scene, gathering witness statements, and reviewing evidence to track down the perpetrators. Officials assured the public that no stone will be left unturned.

A police spokesperson stated: “This is a sensitive case. Investigations are ongoing, and we urge the public to remain calm while the authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.”

Somtochukwu was not only an accomplished journalist but also a trained lawyer. Before joining Arise News, she had excelled in legal studies, which informed her deep, analytical approach to journalism.

The Vanguard Newspaper reported that efforts to reach the FCT Police Command for further comment were unsuccessful as of press time, but pressure is mounting for swift accountability.

The Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) condemned the killing, saying: “Somtochukwu’s tragic death underscores the urgent need for better protection of women in Nigeria. We call for justice, not only for her but for all victims of gender-targeted violence.”

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Information, extended condolences to the Maduagwu family. In a statement, officials described her death as “a wake-up call to strengthen security and restore public confidence.”

Lagos State Governor also sent a message of sympathy, saying: “The death of Somtochukwu is a tragic loss, not just to her family, but to all Nigerians who value justice, safety, and human dignity. We stand with the family in this moment of grief.”

Born on December 26, 1995, Somtochukwu would have turned 30 this December. Friends describe her as cheerful, deeply compassionate, and always willing to support others.

“She was someone who believed in people, who lifted others even when she was going through her own struggles,” a close friend recalled.

Her death has not only left a vacuum in her family and workplace but also in the wider Nigerian media community, where many regarded her as one of the future leaders of journalism.

The tragedy has intensified discussions around security in Abuja and across the country. Media unions, including the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), have called for urgent reforms to protect citizens, particularly journalists who are often vulnerable targets.
