The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s education sector reforms are already creating real opportunities for young Nigerians and strengthening access, stability and quality across the nation’s universities.

The Minister made the assertion while receiving the Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja (formerly University of Abuja), Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, who led the university’s management team on a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.

Idris said initiatives such as the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), student innovation grants and improved government–university relations are key pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at repositioning the education sector.

He stressed the Federal Government’s commitment to deeper collaboration with tertiary institutions, particularly in advancing media education and addressing the growing challenge of misinformation, disinformation and abuse of digital platforms.

The Minister described the visit as timely, noting that the Ministry of Information and National Orientation remains committed to supporting academic institutions through public communication, mentorship and policy alignment.

Commending the university for establishing a Faculty of Media and Communication Studies, Idris said the unbundling of Mass Communication into specialised programmes aligns with global best practices and will help bridge the gap between theory and professional media practice.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting media and information literacy, referencing the country’s hosting of the UNESCO Category II Media and Information Literacy Institute — the first of its kind globally.

In his remarks, Vice Chancellor Fawehinmi congratulated the Minister on his stewardship of the information sector and sought the Ministry’s support and mentorship for the Faculty of Media and Communication Studies ahead of its accreditation.

He reaffirmed the university’s readiness to align with Federal Government programmes and policy priorities.
