President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian editors to make truth, verification, and balance the anchors of their journalism, warning that misinformation poses a growing threat to national cohesion and democratic stability.

Speaking at the Annual Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) held at the State House, Abuja, the President urged media professionals to exercise their influence responsibly and help strengthen public trust in national institutions.

“The editorial function is more important than ever,” Tinubu said. “Verification must be your anchor; balance must be your principle, and professional judgment must be your guide.”

The President commended the historical role of the Nigerian press in defending freedom and advancing democracy, noting that journalism in Nigeria “has been more than a profession — it has been an instrument of national awakening.”

He recalled the sacrifices of journalists who stood against colonialism and military dictatorship, adding that democracy can only thrive when freedom is exercised responsibly.

“Freedom secured through struggle is not self-sustaining,” Tinubu warned. “A democracy is sustained not only by elections and laws, but by the integrity of public conversation.”

The President highlighted the administration’s ongoing economic and institutional reforms, saying they are designed to stabilize the economy and “widen the circle of opportunity for all citizens.”

He acknowledged the hardship faced by Nigerians but maintained that early signs of progress are visible across several sectors.

Tinubu also underscored the role of the media in nation-building, urging editors to promote unity rather than cynicism.

“Disagreement must never translate into the erosion of national cohesion. Criticism, when informed and constructive, serves the nation. But cynicism that breeds mistrust weakens the foundations of society,” he said.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to economic recovery and stability, the President said cooperation between government, civil society, the private sector, and the media is crucial to building the Nigeria of collective aspiration.

“The tone you set in your newsrooms, the standards you enforce, and the courage with which you defend the truth will shape the direction of our national journey,” Tinubu told the editors.

He urged the media to choose “clarity over confusion, responsibility over recklessness, and hope over despair,” adding that the stories told by the press influence the kind of country Nigeria becomes.
