President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate suspension of the newly introduced cashless toll gate system at airports across the country.
The directive followed reports that passengers and motorists were stranded due to heavy traffic congestion at airport entrance gates.
The policy, which barred cash payments at toll gates, took effect on March 1, 2026.
Under the system, motorists were required to use prepaid access cards or electronic payment channels.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo said the president directed the ministry to review the implementation.

Keyamo said the government would return to the drawing board to improve the system.
He explained that the president instructed the ministry to act quickly and provide a workable solution.
According to the minister, the government may engage the private sector to develop a more efficient electronic revenue collection system.
He said the goal is to prevent the traffic gridlock experienced at airport gates.
The minister also announced a temporary hybrid system.
The arrangement will allow motorists to make both cash payments and use prepaid cards issued by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
The hybrid payment option will remain in place pending the conclusion of the review.
Officials said the move is aimed at easing congestion and improving passenger access to airports nationwide.
