President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated that Nigeria remains a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty and tolerance for all faiths.

In a statement issued by the President on Saturday, he said his administration has maintained active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders since 2023, addressing security challenges that affect citizens across all faiths and regions.

He described as inaccurate any characterization of Nigeria as a religiously intolerant nation, insisting it does not reflect the country’s reality or the government’s consistent efforts to safeguard freedom of religion and belief.

“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it,” the President stated.

He reaffirmed that Nigeria’s Constitution protects citizens of all faiths and expressed his administration’s readiness to work with the United States government and the international community to promote understanding and strengthen the protection of religious communities.
