President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured the late former Head of State Murtala Ramat Mohammed, calling him a principled military leader with democratic ideals.

Tinubu said Mohammed’s short time in office helped shape Nigeria’s political transition and supported Africa’s liberation movements. Represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, the President also praised Mohammed’s anti-corruption efforts and his commitment to restoring civilian rule in Nigeria.

At the event, former President Olusegun Obasanjo remembered Mohammed’s foresight in grooming capable successors, noting that such planning remains rare among leaders. Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said Mohammed’s vision of an empowered Africa is coming true through economic growth and initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Former Malawian President Joyce Banda also paid tribute, describing Mohammed as a selfless Pan-Africanist devoted to public service. Speakers highlighted his support for African liberation struggles and his contributions to political and economic progress across the continent.
