Tinubu Directs Appointees Seeking Office to Resign by March 31

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to resign.

The directive requires affected officials to step down from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.

The decision follows provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the election timetable released by INEC.

The circular announcing the directive was issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume and released through the General Services Office.

Officials affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers and senior special assistants to the president.

Other affected appointees include directors-general and chief executives of federal agencies, commissions and government-owned companies.

The directive also applies to personal assistants and other political appointees serving under the president.

Affected officials are required to submit resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The government said the measure is necessary to ensure compliance with electoral laws and political transparency.

President Tinubu said the directive will help create a level playing field for aspirants ahead of the 2027 elections.

The administration also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and credible electoral processes.
