A Nigerian terror suspect has admitted spying on the United States and Israeli embassies in Nigeria. He said he acted on behalf of Iranian agents, a court heard on Wednesday.

The case is before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Three suspects, Haruna Abbas, Ibrahim Musa, and Adam Suleiman—are standing trial. Security agents arrested them in 2013 in Kano and Lagos.

A witness from the Department of State Services (DSS) told the court that one suspect confessed during interrogation. He explained how agents recruited him to monitor U.S. and Israeli interests in Nigeria.

The witness said the suspect also recruited other Nigerians into the network. He added that Iranian operatives trained some members in weapons handling and surveillance.

The DSS officer described these actions as terrorism. He said civilians should not receive military training or carry out surveillance for foreign groups.

The prosecution asked the court for a faster hearing. The defence did not oppose the request, and the court granted it.

The trial will continue as authorities try to uncover the full scope of the operation.
