The stage is set for another blockbuster edition of the Spanish Super Cup, as the Royal Spanish Football Federation officially confirmed the semi-final pairings for the 2025 tournament. Defending champions Barcelona will square off against Athletic Club, while Real Madrid are set for a fiery Madrid derby against Atletico in the other semi-final.

The competition, scheduled for January 7–11 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will once again unfold at the King Abdullah Sports City a venue that has become synonymous with Spain’s revamped showpiece since its expansion in 2019.

Hansi Flick’s Barcelona arrive as holders and heavyweights, fresh from last season’s 5–2 demolition of Real Madrid in the final a victory that capped off their historic Treble. With a mix of youthful brilliance and experienced leadership, the Blaugrana will be aiming not only to retain their crown but also to reinforce their resurgence on the European stage.

Athletic Club, meanwhile, step into the semi-final with the underdog spirit that has long defined their history. Known for their passionate Basque identity and relentless pressing, they will look to disrupt the champions’ rhythm and script an upset.

On the other side of the draw, football fans are bracing for a Madrid derby of epic proportions. Real Madrid, smarting from their humiliation in last year’s final, have a chance to redeem themselves but Atletico will not make it easy. Diego Simeone’s side thrive on occasions like this, where grit, tactical discipline, and sheer willpower often tilt the balance.

Since the Super Cup’s format was reshaped to include four teams  LaLiga champions and runners-up, plus the Copa del Rey finalists  the competition has become a global spectacle. Hosting it in Saudi Arabia has sparked debate but undeniably expanded its reach, turning the January showdown into a high-stakes mini-tournament.

As Barcelona, Athletic, Real, and Atletico prepare to descend on Riyadh, the narratives are irresistible: Can Barca defend their crown? Will Real find redemption? Or could Simeone’s Atletico or the proud Basques of Athletic steal the spotlight?

One thing is certain: Spain’s footballing giants are set for a week of drama, passion, and spectacle under the desert lights.
