A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has criticised journalist Mehdi Hasan over his recent interview with presidential spokesperson Daniel Bwala.

In a statement titled “Hostility Is Not Journalism,” Showunmi argued that the exchange crossed the line between tough questioning and what he described as hostility.

According to Showunmi, the interview appeared confrontational from the start.

He said questions were framed in a manner that suggested a prosecutorial approach rather than an effort to explore policy issues.

Showunmi also claimed that interruptions and dismissals during the conversation limited the opportunity for detailed responses.

He argued that journalism should allow space for guests to present their views while still facing difficult questions.

The PDP figure said interviews involving government officials should focus on national issues such as security, economic reforms and governance policies.

He added that such discussions help audiences better understand government strategies and policy direction.

Showunmi stressed that firm questioning is important in journalism but should not cross into ridicule or personal confrontation.

The interview between Hasan and Bwala has sparked debate across Nigerian political circles and on social media.

Supporters and critics of both figures have offered contrasting views on whether the exchange reflected strong journalism or excessive hostility.
