Showers in North Central, But No Official Rainy Season Yet-NiMET

NiMET says recent rains across parts of Nigeria’s North-Central, including the FCT, are isolated pre-onset showers not the official start of the rainy season. Farmers are advised not to rush planting, as early rains can be misleading.

Despite recent showers in parts of Nigeria’s North-Central region, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has confirmed that the rainy season has not yet officially started.

States in the North-Central zone including areas around the Federal Capital Territory  have recorded wet weather, but the agency says these are isolated rains or pre-onset activity rather than the start of the official season.

Early rains can be misleading. Like past advisories, NiMET has warned farmers not to rush into planting before the real onset, as early showers don’t always signal the start of sustained rains.

NiMET’s broader seasonal outlook for Nigeria suggests that the rainy season’s start varies by region  usually beginning earlier in the south and later in central and northern states even if isolated rains come first.

Timing the rainy season correctly is crucial for farming, flood preparedness, and water resource planning and early showers can sometimes lead to false starts if misinterpreted.
