Earlier today in Abuja, Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, attended the Abuja Dialogue 2026, an initiative convened by his office in collaboration with Lagos State’s Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy.

Kashim Shettima delivered a keynote address at the summit, calling for more opportunities and responsibilities for young people in leadership roles.

He said the future belongs to young people who are ready to lead. However, he warned that leadership loses meaning when leaders sideline the youth.

Shettima also stressed that no nation can afford a disconnect between its leaders and its young population.

According to him, Nigeria must deliberately create purpose and direction for its youth. He urged both public and private institutions to open more leadership opportunities.

In addition, he encouraged stakeholders to give young people real responsibilities. This, he said, will prepare them for leadership roles.

He described initiatives like the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy as critical platforms for national development.

The Vice President noted that the Abuja Dialogue offers practical learning for young Nigerians. It helps them understand how leadership works and how to succeed in public service.

He also praised the Lagos State Government for supporting youth-focused initiatives. He described the academy as a model that other states should adopt.

The summit ended with strong calls for inclusive governance. Stakeholders also pledged to invest more in youth leadership development.

Overall, participants agreed that Nigeria’s future depends on how well it prepares its young people today.
