Several worshippers were killed on Friday after an explosion ripped through a Shiite Muslim mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, police have confirmed.

The blast occurred during Friday prayers, causing panic and injuries among worshippers inside the mosque.

Police official Zafar Iqbal said several victims were rushed to hospitals, while the number of casualties was still being determined.

He confirmed that fatalities had occurred but did not provide an exact figure.

Security forces have cordoned off the area, while investigators work to determine the cause and nature of the explosion.
