The Senate Committee on Finance has withdrawn its earlier recommendation that President Bola Tinubu remove the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission, Hussaini Magaji.

The committee had previously urged the President to sack the CAC boss. Lawmakers accused him of repeatedly failing to appear before them.

However, the Senate later reversed its decision after Magaji appeared and apologised.

Last week, during a session with the Federal Government’s economic team, the committee criticised Magaji’s absence.

Lawmakers said he ignored several invitations. They also objected to his decision to send junior officers instead of appearing personally.

As a result, the committee recommended his removal.

At a fresh session, Senator Jibrin Isa (Kogi East) moved a motion to rescind the earlier resolution. Senator Nasir Daura (Katsina North) seconded the motion.

The committee then reconsidered the matter.

This followed what members described as genuine remorse shown by the CAC Registrar.

Committee Chairman Reprimands CAC Boss

Committee Chairman, Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), openly criticised Magaji.

He said the committee was unhappy with the registrar’s repeated absence. According to him, oversight powers granted by the Constitution require agency heads to appear when summoned.

He added that the committee recommended removal only after several failed attempts to secure his presence.

Magaji Offers Unreserved Apology

In his response, Magaji apologised to the lawmakers. He said his late arrival was due to travel from Lagos.

Furthermore, he announced the creation of a dedicated liaison office. The office will handle communication between the commission and the National Assembly.

He assured the committee that such an incident would not happen again. He also accepted full responsibility.

Senators Accept Explanation

After hearing his apology, several senators appealed for leniency.

Consequently, the chairman put the rescission motion to a voice vote. The committee unanimously adopted it.

Therefore, the earlier recommendation for his removal was officially withdrawn.

Role Of The Corporate Affairs Commission

The Corporate Affairs Commission regulates company registration in Nigeria. It registers businesses, limited liability partnerships and incorporated trustees.

In addition, it maintains official records for corporate entities.

With the dispute resolved, the committee is expected to continue its oversight functions while maintaining communication with the commission.
