Senate Passes Electoral Bill, Amends INEC Timelines

The Senate passed the electoral amendment bill after clause-by-clause consideration, approving 155 clauses aimed at refining Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of future polls.

Lawmakers amended several provisions, notably reducing INEC’s timeline to publish notice of election from 360 days to 180 days before polling nationwide general elections cycle.

The Senate rejected real-time electronic transmission of results, retaining Clause 60 of the 2022 Act allowing INEC to determine approved methods for result management processes.

Lawmakers also retained the Permanent Voter Card as sole accreditation means, rejecting electronic or alternative identification proposed under Clause 47 during elections nationwide cycle period.
