The Embassy of Russia in Turkmenistan said on Monday that Russian citizens unable to leave Iran can depart through neighbouring Turkmenistan.

The embassy confirmed the option in a statement on its Telegram channel.

Turkmenistan shares about 1,148 kilometres (713 miles) of border with northeastern Iran, providing a possible land route for those seeking to exit.

Russian nationals wishing to use this route are advised to register with the Russian embassy in Tehran before travelling.

Turkmenistan normally enforces strict visa requirements for foreign visitors, and travellers must meet those conditions to enter.

The embassy’s guidance comes amid wider efforts to help Russians and other foreign nationals leave Iran following military strikes in the Middle East.

Other routes, including crossings via Azerbaijan and Armenia, have also been active.
