The Presidency has clarified details of the Nigeria–United Kingdom migration agreement signed during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit.

The clarification follows what officials described as widespread misinformation about the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the agreement focuses on regulated and safe migration.

The agreement was signed between Nigeria’s Ministry of Interior and the UK Home Office.

Officials said the MoU strengthens cooperation on migration and efforts to combat irregular migration.

The Presidency stated that Nigeria is not required to accept foreign nationals under the agreement.

It explained that only verified Nigerian citizens will be repatriated under the framework.

Authorities said identification and verification processes will be conducted before any return is approved.

The agreement also provides that returnees must be treated with dignity and respect.

Officials said human rights protections are included in all aspects of the migration process.

The MoU also allows returnees to move with their personal belongings.

It provides opportunities for reintegration support, including accommodation and access to economic opportunities.

The Nigeria Immigration Service retains full responsibility for issuing travel documentation.

The Presidency said Nigeria has not ceded any sovereign authority to the United Kingdom.

Officials urged media organisations to verify information before reporting on the agreement.

The government said the MoU aligns with previous migration agreements signed between both countries.
