The newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to approve the creation of Ibadan State before the 2027 general elections.

The monarch made the call during his coronation ceremony in Ibadan on Friday, where traditional rulers, political leaders, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate his ascension to the throne.

Oba Olakulehin said the demand for Ibadan State is not new, stressing that it represents the long-standing aspirations of the people of Ibadanland for greater recognition and autonomy within Nigeria’s federal structure.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider and approve Ibadan State before the 2027 elections,” the Olubadan said. “This is a collective dream of our people, and we believe it will further enhance national unity and development.”

The monarch also pledged to work closely with government authorities to ensure peace, security, and development in Ibadanland, noting that the city has always played a key role in Nigeria’s political and economic history.

The coronation ceremony was attended by top dignitaries, including the Sultan of Sokoto, former governors, and serving political leaders. Security was tight at the venue as thousands of residents trooped out to witness the historic event.

Political observers say the renewed call for Ibadan State reflects broader debates about restructuring and state creation, which have remained on Nigeria’s political agenda for decades.

While the Federal Government has yet to respond to the request, the Olubadan’s appeal is expected to spark fresh conversations on whether new states should be created before the next election cycle.
