Ojukwu: Women’s Rights Are Fundamental Human Entitlements

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Tony Ojukwu, says women’s rights are fundamental entitlements.

He spoke during a sideline event at the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York.

Ojukwu said women are demanding rights guaranteed under law, not privileges or concessions from men or institutions.

He urged men and institutions to support gender equity and strengthen partnerships promoting women’s participation in governance and development.

The event was organised by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

Ojukwu emphasised that justice requires inclusion and women must participate actively in decision-making processes.

“You cannot talk about women without having them at the table,” he said during the engagement.

He also disclosed that the commission maintains a zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment.

According to him, women now occupy 10 out of the 15 director positions within the commission.

He added that safe environments and economic empowerment are critical to ending gender-based violence.

Other Nigerian participants included the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubuor .

Also present was Her Regal Majesty Temitope Ogunwusi.

The meeting reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to gender equality and inclusive development.

Participants also called for stronger collaboration to advance women’s rights globally.
