Ogun State Attorney-General Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN) has warned against using the police to settle civil disputes like land, tenancy, or contracts.

He termed the practice unconstitutional, noting that the Ministry of Justice is now actively intervening citing cases where they secured the release of citizens unlawfully detained over private disagreements.

He urged residents to use civil courts instead of the police to avoid undermining the rule of law.

AG Ogungbade stated that police involvement in civil wrongs is unlawful and violates constitutional rights.

The Ministry is now screening land petitions strictly for “genuine criminal elements” and has filed rights enforcement suits for victims of unlawful arrest.

Citizens should resolve grievances through courts or mediation rather than using the police as a tool for intimidation.
