Kogi State has begun the construction of a multi-billion-naira international airport. The project marks a major step toward boosting economic growth and improving regional connectivity.

The government sited the airport in Zariagi, on the outskirts of Lokoja. Officials handed the project over to contractors, including China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Gamji Construction Company, signaling the start of full construction work.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, described the project as strategic. He said the airport will open up the state for trade, investment, and tourism. He added that it will position Kogi as an important hub in Nigeria’s economy.

Officials also said the project will attract local and foreign investors. In addition, it is expected to create thousands of jobs in aviation, logistics, tourism, and related sectors. It will also support local artisans and small businesses through direct and indirect opportunities.

Governor Ododo reaffirmed his commitment to completing the project on time and meeting international standards. He stressed that security remains a top priority, noting that protecting lives and property is key to the project’s success.

The airport project forms part of the state’s wider plan to diversify its economy and improve infrastructure. It also reflects a growing trend among Nigerian states investing in large-scale projects to drive economic growth
