NSIB Confirms Cessna 172 Accident at Sam Mbakwe Airport, Investigation Ongoing

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed an accident involving a Cessna 172 aircraft operated by Skypower Express at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State.

In a statement on Monday, the Bureau said the incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. local time on December 16, 2025.

According to the NSIB, the aircraft was en route from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt when the crew declared an emergency and diverted to Owerri.

The aircraft reportedly crashed in the approach area while attempting to land on Runway 17.

Four occupants were on board the aircraft at the time of the incident. The Bureau confirmed that no fatalities were recorded.

Airport emergency services were immediately activated, arrived at the scene, and secured the area. The NSIB noted that there was no post-crash fire, and the runway remained operational, allowing other flights to continue safely.

The Bureau said it has commenced a full investigation into the accident and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
