The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has rejected demands for the removal of INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria.
Northern CAN says the removal demand is an attempt to politicise religion and could inflame sectarian tensions in the country.
The association stated that Professor Amupitan has a constitutional right to freedom of religion, and that concerns about his faith do not mean he’s unfit for service.
CAN highlighted that many Muslims have served in high office without similar scrutiny, urging Nigerians to prioritize competence and integrity over religious identity.
The body warned that questioning leadership based on religion reinforces fears of discrimination and could deepen divisions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
CAN praised President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of a Christian INEC chairman as a sign of inclusivity and urged focus on credible elections rather than distractions.
