The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread dust haze across large parts of the country, with chances of isolated thunderstorms in some southern states, as Nigerians begin activities on Monday, 12 January 2026.

In its daily weather outlook issued on Sunday, 11 January 2026, NiMet urged citizens to remain weather-aware, warning that dust haze could significantly reduce visibility in several regions.

According to the forecast, northern states are expected to experience moderate dust haze during the morning hours, leading to reduced horizontal visibility. The hazy conditions are predicted to persist through the afternoon and evening across the region.

In the central states, NiMet projected thick dust haze in the morning, with poor visibility conditions expected to continue throughout the day and into the evening.

For the southern states, the agency said inland areas would experience moderate dust haze in the morning, while coastal areas are expected to record sunny skies with patches of clouds. By the afternoon and evening, NiMet forecast continued sunny conditions along the coast, with isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall likely over parts of Lagos, Bayelsa, and Rivers States. Inland southern areas are expected to remain under moderate dust haze.

NiMet cautioned that the dusty conditions could pose health risks, particularly to people with respiratory challenges, and advised motorists and airline operators to exercise caution due to reduced visibility.

The agency further advised airline operators to obtain updated weather briefings from NiMet to ensure safe and efficient flight operations.
