Nigeria, Türkiye Begin Talks to Implement Agreements

Nigeria and Türkiye have begun steps to consolidate gains from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent state visit to Ankara.

Accordingly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, received Türkiye’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, on February 4, 2026.

During the meeting, Ambassador Poroy praised Nigeria’s coordination, which he said ensured the success of the presidential visit.

He stated that the visit strengthened bilateral ties and reaffirmed Nigeria and Türkiye as strategic partners.

Furthermore, the Turkish envoy expressed optimism about the full implementation of agreements reached by both presidents.

In response, Ambassador Tuggar described the visit as historic and transformative for Nigeria–Türkiye relations.

He said the engagement opened a new chapter of cooperation between both countries.

Notably, the minister commended the signing of nine landmark bilateral agreements during the visit.

He explained that the agreements will benefit both governments and their citizens across key sectors.

Additionally, Tuggar called for stronger collaboration in capacity building and diplomatic training.

He highlighted the partnership between Nigeria’s Foreign Service Academy in Lagos and the Turkish Diplomatic Institute.

Meanwhile, both sides agreed to strengthen communication channels for effective follow-up mechanisms.

They also resolved to hold a Political Consultative Meeting later in the year.

The planned engagement aims to ensure timely implementation of agreed outcomes.

Overall, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation and achieving measurable diplomatic results.
