Kashim Shettima has declared that Nigeria is well positioned to lead Africa in leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive economic growth and innovation.
Speaking at the launch of the AI University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at the University of Lagos.
Represented by Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, Shettima described AI as a transformative force capable of expanding human potential and redefining global development.
He emphasised that Nigeria must take an active role in shaping the future of AI.
Moreover, he highlighted the need to build strong digital foundations that empower innovators, governments, and businesses to develop homegrown solutions.

He pointed to ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, innovation ecosystems, and responsible AI governance as evidence of Nigeria’s commitment to becoming a global technology player.
Shettima described the UniPod initiative as part of a broader shift in how universities are positioned for national development.
According to him, the innovation hubs will enable collaboration between students, researchers, and industry players to address real economic challenges.
The initiative, he noted, is not a one-off project but part of a scalable national strategy aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
Earlier, UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah, said the UniPod would ensure that Nigeria’s young population is not only prepared for the future but actively shaping it.
She described the platform as one that connects innovation to enterprise and talent to national prosperity.
