Nigeria may face a deeper electricity crisis in the coming weeks as gas suppliers halt supply to thermal power plants over mounting debts.

According to Joy Ogaji, power generation companies owe gas suppliers about ₦3.3 trillion.

Gas suppliers reportedly stopped supplying fuel to several thermal plants because of unpaid debts.

Many of Nigeria’s power plants depend on gas to generate electricity.

The disruption could therefore reduce the amount of power available on the national grid.

Thermal plants account for a large share of electricity generation in Nigeria.

A reduction in gas supply could lead to lower power output across the country.

Industry experts warn that this may worsen the already unstable electricity supply.

Dr. Ogaji, who heads the Association of Power Generation Companies, disclosed the development while addressing concerns in the sector.

She warned that unresolved debts between generation companies and gas suppliers could threaten electricity production.

Nigeria’s power sector has struggled with persistent financial and operational challenges.

These include payment shortfalls, gas supply constraints and infrastructure limitations.

Analysts say resolving the financial gaps in the electricity value chain will be critical to stabilising power supply.
